BRIAN JAMES, PhD

Dr Brian James has over 30 years' experience in research and development, regulatory affairs and clinical research in pharmaceuticals, medical devices and drug-device combinations. Prior to forming Interface, he was in charge of global clinical and regulatory affairs, and a member of the management board of the Group Research Centre at Smith & Nephew, working on pharmaceuticals, biomaterials, medical devices and tissue engineered products.

Prior to this he set up the UK office of Angelini Pharmaceuticals, where he was responsible for clinical and regulatory affairs, and worked in the areas of oncology, diabetes and antidepressants. He was previously in charge of regulatory affairs and a member of the product development group at A H Robins, with responsibility for the registration of prescription, OTC, veterinary and cosmetic products across Europe. Dr James started his career as a research scientist at Beecham Research Laboratories, where he specialised in penicillin and cephalosporin research.

Dr James is a past Chairman of the British Institute of Regulatory Affairs (BIRA), was the first President of The Organisation for Professionals in Regulatory Affairs (TOPRA), and has been a member of the board of the Pan European Federation of Regulatory Affairs Societies (PEFRAS). He was one of the industry team that worked with the European Commission to develop the European Medical Device legislation. He lectures widely on all aspects of regulatory affairs.
